Car hire Fuerteventura

The Canary Islands are an incredibly popular tourist destination, and it is perhaps Fuerteventura that gets the majority of the tourist trade. It’s easy to understand why when you get a look at the fabulous beaches and spectacular sights that are around every corner of this island. Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands, but still small enough that it is the perfect place to explore by car. Whether you want to explore the beautiful city of Corralejo or somewhere a little more secluded, a car hire is arguably the best way to get around the island.

Before we talk about the places you can visit when you hire a car in Fuerteventura (Voiture Fuerteventura), we should probably take some time to talk about the rules of the road there. If you have ever driven in Europe, then you will already know most of the rules, but for those of you visiting this part of the world for a first time, a few things will probably be new to you.

car hire fuerteventura, driving tips

Driving in Fuerteventura

In Fuerteventura, you will drive the car that you hire on the right-hand side of the road, passing other vehicles on the left. Be aware of the other vehicles around you, as taxis and buses will expect you to give way to them. You must be strapped in with a seat belt at all times, and you will receive a hefty on the spot fine if you are caught operating a car without a seat belt on. Before you get behind the wheel of the car that you hire in Fuerteventura, make sure that it comes equipped with two warning triangles and a reflective vest in case you experience problems and need to pull over. You should only ever use your horn in residential areas if there is an emergency, and you should never use headphones or earbuds while driving. Speed limits are clearly posted, and should be strictly adhered to.

At just 60 miles long and 18 miles wide, Fuerteventura is a place made to explore via your car hire. Anywhere you want to go is essentially a day trip, and finding parking is usually very easy, and quite often free. One thing than you may want to check when you hire a vehicle is whether you are allowed to venture off the main highways. Some rental firms will insist that you stick to the main roads and steer clear of what amounts to off-road driving.

Corralejo Beaches

Corralejo – There are a ton of great sights and things to do on the island of Fuerteventura, but we like the idea of hitting one of the many amazing beaches on the island first. Take a picnic, and be sure to add some goat cheese in there, and a map and take some time to think about where you want to go and what you want to do. The city of Corralejo probably offers the most treats for a weary traveler, but there are plenty of other amazing spots along the way.

Seafood in El Cotillo

Seafood in El Cotillo

El Cotillo – Since you are surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, it stands to reason that great seafood is going to be on offer. Some of the freshest seafood can be found in El Cotillo, especially if you are fond of the more exotic catches of the day. This is the perfect way to end the day after you have gone hiking through the trails that cut across the barren volcanic landscape that is so prevalent in Fuerteventura. If that’s a little too hot for you, perhaps you may want to cool off with a spot of surfing, snorkeling, or some other fun water sport. You can also get back to nature with a boat trip across to Lobos Island, home to some beautiful birds, as well as a lighthouse that you can explore.

Car hire Corralejo

Corralejo - Since many of the roads that you may ride on are of the rougher variety, you may want to consider a 4X4 as the car that you hire in Fuerteventura. Mountain passes and other roads that may otherwise have been off limits will suddenly be open to you, and you will see parts of Fuerteventura that will make you feel like an explorer from olden days. There are many great places to stay on the island, but it is Corralejo, which sits on the northern tip, that perhaps serves as the perfect hub for your vacation.

Some Information About Fuerteventura Airport

Car hire at Fuerteventura Airport

Since Fuerteventura is an island in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean, it’s no real surprise that the airport serves as a major lifeline for the tourist trade. It’s also the place to go if you want to hire a car on the island, and Fuerteventura Airport certainly has plenty of options in that regard. The airport officially opened in 1969, and while it had humble beginnings, the popularity of the Canary Islands led to major renovations being done at Fuerteventura Airport in the 1990’s.

Fuerteventura Airport, which is also known as El Matorral Airport, is in an ideal location, as it sits just a few km southwest of the capital city of Puerto Del Rosario. As mentioned earlier, Fuerteventura is not particularly large, which is why a car hire is such a good idea. You can get off your plane at the airport, hire a car, and be on your way to explore the island in no time at all.

Airport Facilities

Besides being able to hire a car at Fuerteventura airport, you will also be able to choose from several different places to eat and drink.
